16-year old aspiring poet/writer, Rohan Singh gets expelled from Shimla's prestigious Bishop Cotton School, and is sent home to Jamshedpur, where his furious widowed father, Bhairav, who had not visited him for 8 years, instructs him to work at their family business until lunch-time, and then attend engineering college. He also finds out that his father had re-married, is again a widower, and has a school-going son, Arjun; and he reluctantly attempts to fit in his father's plans. Things take a turn for the worst after Rohan gets arrested, and Arjun gets hospitalized.

The first time Ajay saw Pia, she served him drinks. She affected him more than the alcohol, and he found true love. He was a leading psychiatrist, but she messed up his mind. The first time Pia saw Ajay, he had too much to drink. She watched him make a fool of himself, and was relieved when he passed out. She was a woman who followed her heart, but despite his claims of true love, she had made up her mind. Thus began the story of Ajay and Pia. A love story, that begins at sea. Ajay and Pia develop a strong and special bond. In each other, they find an anchor. They rush into marriage, despite the advice and failing relationships of their friends. But no marriages can be complete without problems, and Ajay and Pia have also have to face hurdles, some of which seem insurmountable. Mumbai-based Dr. Ajay Mehra fools New Jersey-based Piya into believing that they have a lot in common on board a cruise, but eventually relents and confesses. After the cruise, he and Piya connect, and decide to get married. They soon settle down to a fairly harmonious lifestyle, and soon Piya becomes pregnant. Their happiness is shattered when Piya is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and soon both will be presented with a choice - go ahead with the pregnancy and subsequent birth - or endanger Piya's life.
Siva (Dhanush) is a happy-go-lucky young boy in a large joint family of three elder brothers. Siva is the son of one of the brothers and studies from a hostel away from home. Dhanush is always helpful and always comes in when others need him. In one of his obliging acts he helps his cousin sister to elope with her lover against the family choice and this annoys the large family and he is asked to stay away.
On another occasion, here also to help a friend, Siva kidnaps Pooja (Genelia) on a mistaken identity from the marriage hall. When Pooja is kidnapped her uncles and their henchmen follow them. Pooja while on the run tells Siva that she wasn’t interested in the marriage and her uncles are forcing her marriage with one of their sons only to seize her properties. Pooja refuses to go back and is resolute to stay with Siva. Later Siva also falls in love with Pooja and determines to marry her only with the consent of all the members of both families.
How Siva manages to convince the elders of the families and the methods he adopts to smoothen their hearts is rest of the story.
